Helsinki (train)-Vyborg-St Petersburg-Pskov-Dünaburg-Kovno-Insterburg-Allenstein-Thorn-Posen-Berlin. During this journey Sibelius took a trip to Leipzig.

Berlin (train)-Nuremberg-Stuttgart-Basel-Luzern-Milan-Genoa-Rapallo. Sibelius also took a trip to Rome, stopping off at Florence.

Using the funds collected by Axel Carpelan, Sibelius was supposed to add a touch of "Mediterranean lightness" to his expressive repertoire. The journey lasted over six months. During it Sibelius outlined several works, including the second symphony.
